Locus
Locus brings conversations, files, a terminal, browser tabs, plans, recurring Agents, and saved deliverables together. Use local Ollama, an eligible ChatGPT plan, or a provider API account. Claude plan accounts are in preview. Local Ollama is the default; Locus never silently switches to a paid account.

What's new in 4.1
Keep your companion beside the work. Open its normal conversation from the sidebar, chat in the right inspector, or use Chat and Activity from the menu bar. The panel and popover share a saved draft, and the companion's chosen folder stays independent of the central project. The offline gallery offers Pitou, Scout, Ninja, Clover, Shadow, and Pirate; older saved appearances remain available. See Your companion.
Separate plugins and a maintained runtime. Agent Worlds and the Social Studio publishing workspace now live in independent plugins. Locus keeps the saved profiles, conversations, permissions, and work. The app bundles the independently maintained, hash-pinned Locus Runtime for process supervision, transport, and recovery. Memory you can inspect and review. See which memory was submitted for a turn, review suggestions before recall, choose optional local semantic search, and review evidence-backed learning proposals. Native Codex memory is an explicit per-agent choice. Restore-protection status explains when deletion history needs recovery. See Workspace Knowledge & Memory.
Recent highlights
Specialists and assigned work. Start with one of 27 editable Agent templates or create a custom role. Assign board cards, calendar events, and notes to saved Agents, then preview completed work, review it, or request a revision. Boards can open in separate synchronized windows. See Agents & Automation.
Plugin windows and more reliable work. Plugins can open their own windows and hand steps to saved Agents with native confirmation. Parallel chats can share a project, plugin tools reconnect when their folder changes, and calendar access failures explain what went wrong. See the 3.3 release notes.
Calendar and Board in the inspector. Calendar shows a month view and daily agenda for calendars connected through macOS Internet Accounts and can create events. Board is a workspace kanban that you and your Agents share, with comments and an attributed activity timeline. See The Inspector.
Saved Agents, with their own chats. Create an Agent with instructions, a model, and access settings. Start a conversation immediately, add more chats, and attach schedule, event, or price triggers when needed. Work and Agent preserve separate conversations and drafts. Agent chats support the full workflow and can delegate bounded helper work or use a configured team.
A plan that carries through. Duo pairs a planner and builder. The task detail and recovery view keeps the approved plan, current checks, outputs, findings, and recovery together. Preview selective file restoration and turn a useful instruction into an approved reusable check.
Independent work and SSH deployments. Choose an opt-in service on your Mac or prepare a deployment to an owned Linux or Apple Silicon Mac host in Runtimes. Review snapshots, accounts, approvals, and returned changes. Version 3.0 strengthened packaging and update recovery; portable archives remain candidates pending live-host validation.
More model and image choices. Claude plan accounts are in preview, separate from Claude API. Image creation adds ChatGPT-account GPT Image 2 and more OpenAI API models. Usage records distinguish estimates, subscriptions, and missing pricing.
Requirements and editions
Use an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later. Packaged apps include the agent runtime. Local Ollama and model weights are separate installations; hosted accounts use their own access and billing.
Locus is wallet-free. Wallet functionality belongs to the separate LocusX edition. Identity Vault is a private profile-and-document feature and does not provide cryptocurrency wallets. Installing Locus preserves existing Locus chats, accounts, settings, and browser data; it does not import or delete wallet data.
Automatic updates are available in the direct-download app from 2.7 onward. See Install Locus before upgrading an older installation.
